SUMMARY:Embracing Body Sovereignty During Medical Forensic Examinations
DESCRIPTION:There have been reports of instances of interaction with healthcare\, for which a patient may have felt as though they were treated as if they were just a sum of physical parts that need fixing. This type of interaction can lead to the development of mistrust with the healthcare system\, leaving the patient feeling dehumanized. By contrast\, when a medical forensic exam is conducted by a trained clinician\, the exam process can be empowering to patients that have experienced interpersonal violence\, especially those that are American Indian/Alaska Native. The exam process allows these patients to receive medical care in a way that encourages body sovereignty. The promotion of patient’s having control over their own body is embedded throughout the medical forensic exam process. It embodies the essence of patient-centered care by asking the patient\, instead of taking from the patient. Allowing the establishment of physical boundaries instead of breaching boundaries\, while providing options to the patient. This approach may feel really important to American Indian/Alaska Native individuals. National guidance documents\, such as the National Protocol for Sexual Assault Medical Forensic Examinations Adult/Adolescents\, recommends that care be provided to patients that have experienced sexual violence\, in a manner that shifts the power dynamics from the clinician as the healer\, to the patient\, the person in need of healing. \n\nPresenters:\nChenel Vanden Berk\, BSFS\, JD\, RN\, SANE-A\, SANE-P\, International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) and Kelsey Morris\, M.A\, International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) \n\nREGISTER HERE.\n \n\nThis project was supported by Grant No. 15JOVW-23-GK-03969-INDI awarded by the Office on Violence Against Women\, U.S. Department of Justice. SUMMARY:Aligning Medical Forensic Care with Patient’s Needs\, When Services Span Multiple Regions
DESCRIPTION:Forensic Nurses should be prepared to provide medical forensic exams to all patients that present after sexual assault. This included instances where patients are seeking exams in regions that may differ from where the sexual assault or sexual abuse occurred. This may include scenarios such as exams in hospitals where patients have traveled long distances to access and exam; medical facilities that border state lines; or even medical facilities where a patient may present because it is where they feel most comfortable. These circumstances can create complex challenges. Advocacy and other multi-disciplinary collaboration\, can be an invaluable resource to both patients and clinicians when navigating issues that may arise. This webinar will discuss some of those issues and considerations and provide ways to support patients\, as well as clinicians through collaboration and use of appropriate resources. \n\nPresenters:\nChenel Vanden Berk\, BSFS\, JD\, RN\, SANE-A\, SANE-P\, International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN)\n Karla Vierthaler\, National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC)\nTiffany Watson\, Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) \n\nREGISTER HERE.\n \n\nThis project was supported by Grant No. 15JOVW-23-GK-05172-MUMU awarded by the Office on Violence Against Women\, U.S. Department of Justice. SUMMARY:Decoding Pediatric Expert Review: Insights and Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Though a small percentage of pediatric medical forensic exams have positive findings\, it is important that those exams are reviewed by an expert to increase accuracy of identification and to prevent “overcalling” of positive exam findings. Because of this\, the National Children’s Alliance Standards of Accreditation for Children’s Advocacy Centers requires that all exams with positive or diagnostic findings undergo expert review by an advanced medical consultant. In this webinar\, the presenters will discuss positive exam findings that require expert review\, define the expert review process\, identify strategies to maintain patient confidentiality\, and provide resources for expert review. \n\nPresenters:\nJennifer Stimson MPA\, LMSW and Laci Smith MSN\, RN\, CPN\, SANE-A\, SANE-P \n\nREGISTER HERE.\n \n\nThis project was supported by Grant No. 15JOVW-23-GK-05172-MUMU awarded by the Office on Violence Against Women\, U.S. Department of Justice. SUMMARY:Interdisciplinary Engagement to Enhance Court Testimony
DESCRIPTION:Testimony may seem daunting to clinicians without proper preparation. This concern may exist with clinicians who are new to testimony or who have rarely been called to testify. Appropriate and effective preparation is a process that takes more than simply reviewing a medical chart. Whether a civil or criminal proceeding\, and whether called by a prosecutor\, plaintiff’s attorney\, or defense attorney\, the clinician is an independent and neutral medical professional. Clinicians play a valuable role in providing insight into the medical care and treatment conducted by the clinician\, which is offered as evidence in the proceeding. In this webinar\, legal and subject matter experts will share a newly-released resource for clinicians and attorneys that provides important information on engaging with professionals of each discipline while preparing for testimony. \n\nPresenters:\nPatti Powers\, JD\, Senior Attorney Advisor\, AEquitas & Laci Smith MSN\, RN\, CPN\, SANE-A\, SANE-P Forensic Nursing Specialist\, IAFN \n\nREGISTER HERE.\n \n\nThis project was supported by Grant No. 15JOVW-23-GK-05172-MUMU awarded by the Office on Violence Against Women\, U.S. Department of Justice. SUMMARY:Quiet Suffering: Recognizing the Impact of Strangulation Across the Lifespan in Tribal Communities
DESCRIPTION:Strangulation is a prevalent occurrence in child maltreatment\, IPV\, and sexual violence across the lifespan. The impact of strangulation can lead to harmful\, life-long health consequences\, and even death. Yet\, only a fraction of the victims of non-fatal strangulation will seek help on their own. When help is sought\, healthcare professionals may not give full consideration to the occurrence of strangulation and overlook appropriate interventions that are needed. This webinar will provide an overview of the important aspects of strangulation\, such as the mechanics\, as well as the impact of those victimized by it. The content offered will provide a foundation for assessment\, appropriate interventions\, and responses to Non-fatal Strangulation while highlighting the IAFN Strangulation Toolkit as an essential resource. The presenters will address potential challenges faced by those responding to this particular form of violence and opportunities to help those impacted by strangulation within American Indian and Alaska Native communities. \n\nPresenters:\nChenel Vanden Berk\, BSFS\, JD\, RN\, SANE-A\, SANE-P\nInternational Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) \nAngelita Olowu\, BSN\, RN\, SANE-A\, SANE-P\nInternational Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) \n\nREGISTER HERE.\n \n\nThis project was supported by Grant No. 15JOVW-23-GK-03969-INDI awarded by the Office on Violence Against Women\, U.S. Department of Justice. SUMMARY:Guiding the Care of Patients Experiencing IPV Through a National Protocol
DESCRIPTION:Presenters: IAFN & OVW staff\n \nResearch has provided data informing that often there is inadequate training provided to clinicians on who\, when\, and how to screen for and respond to intimate partner violence. This potentially leads to inconsistencies in the care provided to this patient population. The Office on Violence Against Women has funded the International Association of Forensic Nurses to collaborate with a variety of subject matter experts and develop a national protocol that provides healthcare clinicians with guidance that enhances care for patients that experience intimate partner violence. This session will provide an extensive overview of the national protocol and include strategies for integration into your clinical practice. \n \n\nREGISTER HERE.

Public benefits eligibility varies by state\, by form of immigration case\, whether the victim is an adult or a child\, and the type of benefit the victim is seeking. To support participants’ work with immigrant survivors the webinar will demonstrate how participants can use NIWAP’s new online benefits map and state-by-state charts. The webinar will conclude a brief overview addressing key facts participants need to know about immigrant survivors’ legal rights to obtain civil protection orders\, custody of children\, and child support. Webinar participants will receive links to tools and resources in the NIWAP on-line library on each of the topics discussed in this webinar. \n\nRegister today.
