Service Animals and the Medical Forensic Exam: what are things for the SANE to consider?

ASHLEY BROMPTON
Ashley Brompton joined the Center on Victimization and Safety as a Program Associate in November 2016.
At Vera, Ashley provides technical assistance to victim service providers and disability service providers around the country that are striving to improve services to survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence who have disabilities and Deaf survivors. She also coordinates the Center’s national outreach, including the End Abuse of People with Disabilities webinar series and monthly newsletter. Additionally, she provides expertise and support for our NoVo Coalition to End Violence Against People with Disabilities and a project focused on creating resources for first responders, victim service providers, attorneys, forensic interviews and others on addressing the needs of victims with disabilities.
Prior to joining the Vera Institute of Justice, Ashley was the Criminal Justice Fellow at The Arc’s National Center on Criminal Justice and Disability, where she advocated on behalf of individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities who were involved with the criminal justice system as victims of crime or suspect/ offenders. Ashley also advocated on behalf of people with disabilities in criminal court and mental health diversion court in North Carolina and Washington, D.C.
Ashley has a juris doctor from Wake Forest University School of Law and a Bachelor’s degree in political science from Florida Gulf Coast University. She is licensed to practice law in Florida.
KIM DAY
Kim Day, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P, is the Forensic Nursing Director at the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN). In this position, she provides oversight of Forensic Nursing content experts, provides technical assistance, and education around the U.S. Department of Justice’s National SAFE Protocol for adults and adolescents. She holds dual certification as a SANE-A and SANE-P by the IAFN. Ms. Day coordinated hospital SANE program and the county wide Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) for 8 years before beginning her current position. She has been a SANE, caring for victims across the lifespan for 21 years and a registered nurse specializing in critical care and emergency care for 41 years.
ANGELITA OLOWU
Angelita Olowu is a Forensic Nurse with 12 years of nursing experience. She holds dual certifications as a SANE-A and a SANE-P. Currently, Angelita is a Forensic Nursing Specialist at the International Association of Forensic Nurses. In this role she serves as a content expert, provides technical assistance on the recommendations within both the National Adolescent/Adult and Pediatric SAFE Protocols. In addition, Angelita teaches Indian Health Service and IAFN Adolescent/Adult and Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner didactic and clinical education. In her previous role as a fulltime forensic nurse at Hillcrest Cleveland Clinic Hospital, Angelita provided education and leadership to the forensic nursing staff. She also provided guidance around her patient population to the Hospital and the community partners. Angelita has a background in Trauma and Emergency nursing. In her role as a forensic nurse she served patients whom have been victimized by sexual assault, domestic and intimate partner violence, child maltreatment, elder maltreatment, human trafficking, strangulation, physical assaults, and traumas with penetrating injuries. She provides community education and outreach to various entities including schools, colleges and universities, and other health care professionals on prevention and topics related to caring for those who have experienced trauma of personal violence. She has served as a member of a hospital based Domestic Violence Committee, a hospital-based Child Protection Team, and the Cuyahoga County Child Advocacy Center Advisory Committee. She is a member of the International Association of Forensic Nursing, the Emergency Nurses Association, the Cuyahoga County Sexual Assault Response Team, the Civil Rights Task Force, and she serves on a committee with the Collaborative to End Human Trafficking and a chair for the Integrating Culture Committee with the Canopy Child Advocacy Center.
