The Role of the Registered Nurse at the Child Advocacy Center (CAC)

Jennifer Pierce-Weeks, BSN, RN, SANE-P, SANE-A, is Chief Executive Officer for the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN), where she implemented the adult/adolescent and pediatric online SANE trainings and learning management system. She comes with 35 years nursing experience, with a focus on forensic nursing since 1995. She presents nationally on a variety of forensic nursing-related topics, including sexual assault and abuse, intimate partner violence, strangulation, child maltreatment and program management and sustainability. Jennifer’s work at a national level includes being Interim CEO and Past-President of the IAFN where she served on the Board from 2006-2010, served as a consultant for the Southwest Center for Law and Policy’s SAFESTAR Project, and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center’s SANE Sustainability Project. In addition, Jennifer has written, edited and reviewed state-specific protocols and customized protocols for hospitals, SARTs and tribal communities. Jennifer was a contributing author for the most recent edition of the Atlas of Sexual Violence; co-authored USAID’s Clinical Management of Children and Adolescents Who Have Experienced Sexual Violence and Exploitation, Technical Considerations for PEPFAR Programs, has contributed to Forensic Health Online; has published in the Journal of Forensic Nursing as well as the Journal of Emergency Nursing; and has edited the STM Learning text Violence Against Women, co-authoring the chapter on strangulation in the living patient.
Janet Carroll, RN, CEN, SANE-A, SANE-P
Janet Carroll, RN, CEN, SANE-A is the Coalition’s Co-Coordinator of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program. In this role, she coordinates the NH Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program in conjunction with the SANE Advisory Board.
Janet has been a nurse for 18 years. Since becoming a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner in 2005, Janet has conducted hundreds of sexual assault evaluations in New Hampshire and Vermont hospitals. She is also Board certified in Emergency Nursing (CEN) and as both an Adolescent/Adult Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE-A) and Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE-P). In addition to her role as the Clinical Coordinator for the NH SANE Program, she has also served as the Clinical Coordinator of the Sexual Assault and Forensic Nurse Examiner Program at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center since 2008.
She has worked with a variety of medical systems to improve their response to survivors of sexual violence. Janet received the Jennifer Pierce-Weeks Award of Excellence in 2012 for her work as a SANE in the State of NH. Janet is also the recipient of the Hands of Hope Award for her work as a SANE in treating children that have experienced abuse. Janet has provided expert witness testimony during court proceedings and has also been published in the Journal of Forensic Nursing.
